Daily Deviation

1 min read
So I got a Daily Deviation.

:icondistortedsmile: was kind enough to feature my image of Lisa Lisa H - 1 by metoikos

Initially my reaction was contentment. A day later and with a flood of kind comments and compliments I feel (like many before me) the need to thank the community for the outpouring of support.

It is worth saying that great photography is usually the result of team work. It is noted in the image caption but let me say it again: credit to Lisa (model), Bronwen (hair), Nicole (makeup) and Dorette (lighting assistant) who all contributed to making this image happen.

Thank you.

To exploration

2 min read
If you're reading this, odds are that you and I have one cardinal thing in common: we love exploring.

Artists want to see more, see farther or see deeper, or hear/feel/taste more/farther/deeper. For me it has meant a life of constant exploration and travel.

Looking back on 2012 I have to admit (sheepishly) that I've come a long way. It's easy to get caught up in your own life and focus so much on the daily tasks that the greater overall journey becomes less prominent. But now I'm reviewing 2012 and I realise that I've achieved many milestones. I've been published multiple times.... on book covers, in magazines, newspapers and online. My photography business has grown steadily. I've travelled widely across the country in the past year as well - physical exploration brings me a level of contentment that is hard to express in words. I've also travelled to two other countries, in the one instance courtesy of a multinational corporate client.

One thing I am very clear about is that none of it would have been possible without the support of certain people. My spouse, my friends, my family, my collaborators and my clients have supported me in my explorations and endeavours. At times I'm sure they must question the wisdom of accompanying me on my silly adventures!

So here's to 2012.

In the coming months I will re-evaluate my business plan and make some adjustments. There are several new avenues of creativity that I want to explore. On top of that I have a mountain of personal projects that need attention. There is also a joint exhibition with :iconfracturedsensuality: in the near future, featuring select pieces from our landscape-nude project.

So... much seen and achieved, but much more to see and achieve ahead.

Viva le curiosité!

It's been 6 months since me last entry - things have progressed rapidly.

It continues to feel like my days are too short for everything that I want to do.

I'm using a new logo/tag - courtesy of my talented friend Danielle, who freelances full-time now as a illustrator/designer.

On the topic of talented friends - several of mine are winning awards and getting published in photography, film and writing. Others have fallen on hard times and I hope that 2011 will end better for them than it began.

An old parable (shared by my dad, who is one of the wisest people I know) goes that if you have traveled long and far towards your destination and then encounter a wall blocking your path, you should throw your hat over the wall instead of feeling defeated and turning around... the point being that it is not impossible to get over the wall and that if you commit something of yourself to the journey on the other side, then you will feel obliged to get over that wall, if only to retrieve your hat. Odds are, that once you've retrieved your hat, you will no longer feel like turning around.

Good things come to those who wait, perhaps, but great things come to those who fetch.

righty - i've been kinda fed up with the mess that my gallery is in... i've resisted the temptation of wholesale deletion (barely)... but i have chopped a lot of deadwood. also the folders are a little more organised. it still ain't ideal, but i have to stop now or i'm going to delete reams of work (basically anything older than 6 months is in danger ;)

ask me in 6 months and i'll tell you the same

a friend of mine - who happens to an awesome photographer - and i have been working on a collaborative project since the end of last year. Brent's work can be seen at :iconfracturedsensuality:

our project is to shoot a series of landscape-nudes in a variety of stunning outdoor settings (of which there are no shortage in Cape Town and surrounds). i've been hesitant to upload images from the project because, well...my standards for this is impossibly high and i'd hate for our very courageous models to be disrespected. nevertheless, i shall begin uploading selected images from the project. Brent already has some great samples up in his gallery.

if you have ideas for locations, or know of people who'd like to pose, please drop me a note.
